Lighting & Fans

Looking to lower your electrical bill? Furnishing your off grid home or perhaps you are downsizing to a solar tiny home? Look in our lighting and fans section for some great ideas! The key to reducing your electrical bill is not necessarily installing a renewable energy system to power your current electrical usage, but reducing your electrical consumption.

More Info on Lighting & Fans

As an example, if a large portion of your electrical bill can be attributed to your air conditioning, a solar electric system is not efficient enough to economically power your home air conditioning. However, a Natural Light 20 Watt Solar Attic Fan can vent hot air from your home and reduce the amount that your air conditioning needs to be on. Additionally, DC Ceiling Fans are a great way to circulate the air in the summer and in the winter. We carry specialized fans made to work with 12 or 24 VDC for your off grid home or cabin.

Lighting is another great way to shed those unwanted watt hours! Natural sunlight is a mood booster as well as an energy saver. Add some high efficiency DC Compact Fluorescent lights and you'll be a shining example of energy efficiency. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use about one quarter of the energy of an incandescent bulb of the same brightness. And for those who are counting every single watt, you will want to explore our growing LED Lamps & Fixtures section.

You can also make-over your outdoor lighting area with self-contained environmentally friendly floodlights powered by small solar panels. See our Flood Lighting section for more ideas. Please remember that we carry both AC and DC products, depending on if your power is coming from a deep cycle battery or inverter, so be sure you are ordering the correct product for your electrical system! If in doubt, just ask us!

Lights: LEDs & CFLs

LED stands for light emitting diode. These are super-efficient light bulbs that use very little energy and last a very long time. Most LED light bulbs are directional, and therefore are great for task lighting. For entire room lighting, the compact fluorescent bulbs work best. CFLs use about a quarter of the energy of an incandescent light bulb. So a 15 watt CFL will give off the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb; and the CFL will last much, much longer.

CFLs do contain a minor amount of mercury, less in fact than incandescent lights. Proper disposal is important. For the most up to date info check the EPA Fact Sheets available on their website for details. Please check www.lamprecycle.org for more information about how to dispose of CFLs in your area.
